We could all use a little extra money. The obvious solution is to get a second job, but if you’re already working 40+ hours a week on someone else’s schedule, the idea of working more hours on a schedule might not sit too well with you. Also, most part-time jobs don’t pay very well. So what can you do?
There are plenty of things you can do to earn extra money!
1. Write articles. Contact blogs about subjects in which you’re an expert. Offer to write an article for them. Or try a site like textbroker.com or elance.com. The money can be good, and you have a lot of flexibility. You can work anytime of the day or night. Blogging is an evergreen concept and you could expand with more ideas by leaning on the private label rights articles that you can find. Writing content can be done from just about anywhere. Just hop on your laptop or your desktop computer and start to create the articles for blogging needs.
2. Sell stuff. Sell all the stuff you have that you don’t want or need anymore. If you’re really feeling rambunctious, ask your neighbors and friends if they have anything they want to sell. You can ask for 10-20% of the selling price. Use eBay or Craigslist to get a good price. This one can be tough. Are you really ready to let some of your things go. Some people might have a hard time when it comes time to start selling items. Selling stuff is a big step. There are lots of apps and websites that people use to sell their stuff.
3. Re-write ads. Contact sellers on eBay or Craigslist and offer to re-write poorly written ads for 2-5% of the selling price. Some folks make a lot of money at this. The trick is to stick to the higher priced items like cars, furniture, and similar things. Advertising is a big deal. You might already be viewing the ads on some of the sites and it can quickly become apparent when you see ads that are missing key ingredients. It might be simple stuff like not having enough details. Some other things like the lack of photos might also cause an ad to get less attention. Rewriting ads could be helpful in more than one way. It helps build your advertising skills and you can earn at the same time.
4. Consult. If you’re an expert at anything, find a way to make some money on the side with it. Maybe you can do taxes in the spring. Or perhaps you have some other talent that a small business could use on a part-time basis. Take an inventory of the things that you know how to do. Start searching online for places to monetize your skill set. Could you come up with a consulting service to sell through fiverr? What about local consulting that you could offer to businesses?
5. Tutor. Tutoring can be a great way to make extra money. The hourly rate can be great, and it’s pleasant, low-stress work. Put an ad on Craigslist or contact the local schools. Think about the subjects where you are really strong. See if there is a need that you can fill. View the online tutorial sites that might have tutoring opportunities through the internet.
6. Give a seminar. This is similar to consulting, but instead of getting a good payday from a couple of sources, you can make a little money from a lot of people. You can probably get a lecture hall at a local university for a small amount of money. Simply advertise and see how many people you can get to sign up. Expand your thinking about creating a seminar. What about taking your skills to the internet and setting up a webinar? You might be able to reach a wider audience than just your local area. Learn how to use webinar software tools and reach a global audience.
7. Start your own website. If you can get traffic, you can make money. Start a blog or a simple website to sell a product or even someone else’s product for a commission. Or, you can charge for advertising on your site. Research internet marketing and implement traffic-getting techniques. Add more websites once you establish some regular profit. Learn how to build websites with software tools like wordpress. Content management systems like wordpress don’t take a long time to learn. After learning how to build one website, you can continue to build new ones in different niches. Creating websites could turn into an opportunity to sell them to other people that need them.
8. Mow lawns. It sounds like a job for a high school kid, but you can make $20+ in 30 minutes. $40+ an hour isn’t bad! It certainly beats delivering pizzas. When you are driving around town, look for houses that have overgrown lawns. Consider getting business cards that you can pass out. Mowing lawns has been around for a long time as money maker, things are starting to change. Don’t forget to think about how technology is shifting things.
9. Deliver newspapers. It’s good money for the amount of time it takes. You can even get some exercise if you get a walking route. Getting news from a newspaper might not be as popular as it once was, but there still might be some people that enjoy sitting down and reading the physical paper. Delivering newspapers is not the only option when it comes to deliveries. Consider delivering other items as well. The truth is things are moving towards the digital world. It might be time to learn new skills for a new way of earning.
10. Ask for a raise. If you think you deserve a raise, it doesn’t hurt to ask. You’re already putting in the time. Even a small raise is like free money. The fear of rejection might be lurking in the background, but it might be time to start facing those things that are causing the fear. Asking for a raise and getting turned down does not need to be the end of the story. Keep looking for more opportunities and alternatives for making more money.
11. Walk dogs. People love their pets and will pay $10-15 for someone to take their dog out at lunchtime for 15 minutes while they’re at work. Some people work second shift and would love for someone to take Fido out for a walk at night. If you like dogs and you have free time, why not consider it?
This is just a very short list of ideas; you can probably come up with many more. Making a little extra money can really help to pay the bills, and you might even find something that you enjoy doing.
